Pertamina's Gas Subholding is empowering villages through the Desa Energi Berdikari program, which converts organic waste into renewable biogas for community use.

Jakarta - Pertamina Gas Subholding, operating under the brand Gaspol, is spearheading a transformative rural development program titled "Desa Energi Berdikari." This initiative is designed to establish energy self-sufficiency in villages by developing small-scale, community-managed renewable energy sources. The focus is predominantly on biogas technology, which provides a practical and sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels for daily needs.

The program execution begins with community engagement and resource mapping. Pertamina Gaspol experts work with villagers to assess the availability of feedstock, such as manure from local livestock farms or waste from agricultural processing. Based on this assessment, tailored biogas reactor systems are installed, coupled with distribution networks to deliver the gas directly to participating homes.

Economically, the program presents a compelling value proposition for the nation. Indonesia's massive subsidy program for 3-kg LPG cylinders represents a continuous fiscal drain. The Desa Energi Berdikari model offers a pathway to gradually reduce this burden by providing a subsidized alternative that is produced locally, thereby keeping energy spending within the local economy and reducing national import volumes.

For the participating communities, the advantages are immediate and multifaceted. Access to a free and continuous supply of cooking gas eliminates a major household expense. The digested effluent from the biogas plants serves as a high-quality, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer, reducing farmers' dependence on chemical fertilizers and improving soil health, which leads to better crop yields and additional savings.

The role of Pertamina Gaspol extends beyond initial construction. The company invests in building local technical capacity through training programs for village operators. This knowledge transfer ensures that communities can handle routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and manage the supply chain for spare parts, thereby guaranteeing the longevity and operational integrity of the energy system.

Environmental sustainability is intrinsically woven into the program's fabric. By capturing methane from decomposing organic waste for productive use, the initiative significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector. It also promotes sustainable waste management practices, turning an environmental liability into a valuable community asset.

Successful case studies from the program's implementation are becoming benchmarks. These villages not only meet their own energy demands but also showcase a model of integrated farming and energy production. The proven success aids in securing buy-in from other communities and local governments, creating a pull effect for wider adoption across different islands and provinces.

Pertamina Gaspol views the Desa Energi Berdikari program as a strategic long-term investment in Indonesia's energy and social fabric. The planned expansion is integral to the company's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments and its mandate to support national development goals. This grassroots energy revolution is fostering a new generation of energy-conscious and economically empowered rural communities
